Why I Started Yoga Practice
In 2016, I traded my running shoes for a yoga mat. Prior to that, I’d been a dedicated runner, completing several half marathons and even a full marathon. While I loved the sport, a race injury left me sidelined.
A friend suggested yoga as a way to maintain my fitness and improve flexibility. I found the practice invigorating and quickly became hooked. However, my initial approach was misguided. Like my running days, I focused on pushing myself to the limit, striving for longer holds and deeper stretches. This aggressive style led to injuries in my wrists, elbows, shoulders, and, ironically, my knees again.
Fortunately, I encountered yoga teachers who helped me understand my mistakes. They taught me that yoga isn’t about competition or ego; it’s about listening to your body. I learned to tune in to my sensations, to honor my limitations, and to find joy in the present moment.
Today, I appreciate the transformative power of yoga. It’s not just about physical fitness; it’s about connecting with myself and the world around me. I’ve discovered a sense of peace and gratitude that I never thought possible.
